Educational Psychology and Educational Technology Doctoral Student Research Group at Michigan State University

The EPET Student Research Group is:
1) Meant to be a sanctioned forum outside of classes where EPET graduate students can share their work and develop their scholarly skill set
2) Meant to contribute to the development of a richer culture of intellectual inquiry and collegiality
3) Meant to promote the sharing of half-baked ideas -- because getting feedback early and often on the projects we're dreaming up leads to better outcomes
4) Meant to be a community of scholars who support and mentor one another through every stage of the EPET doctoral program
5) Meant to be a place where faculty and students can interact and collaborate

As such, we imagine the group's core values to include:
  • critical questioning
  • the devleopment of personal learning networks
  • the leveraging of the collective intellect to support individual growth
  • risk-taking -- putting yourself out there in a safe and non-judgmental academic environment
  • active participation and engagement with the ideas discussed/presented
  • student leadership

This group is not a writing group. Although students will be encouraged to share their work, the mainstay of this group's activities will include (list to be expanded, revised and established by steering committee):
  1. Shared readings on topics, methods or theoretical frameworks of common interest.
  2. Presentations of research followed by discussion
  3. Brainstorming ideas to support the development of a colleague's work
  4. Practicing for milestone presentations (e.g, dissertation defenses, conference presentations)
  5. Professional development on topics such as grant writing, the tenure-track process, early career challenges and how to overcome them
  6. Sharing ideas and processes for publication
